A tribute to the unheard voices of the Hispanic community who with “mucho sudor (lots of sweat)" paved the way for the next generations, Latino Pioneers in Boston uses film, print, and exhibition to follow the journeys of eight leaders: Antonio Molina, Alfredo de Jesus, Maria Sanchez, Carmen Pola, Alberto Vassallo, Frieda Garcia, Jaime Rodriguez, and Regla Gonzalez. Curated by local producer and director Blanca E. Bonilla and guided by Boston-based sociologist Miren Uriarte, these unique stories of resilience, strength, and accomplishments contour the migration of Latinos to Massachusetts and their contributions to Boston.
Our program will feature a screening of the 110-minute-long documentary followed by a Q&A with Bonilla.
To preview the documentary, watch the trailer on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fuaGwtIEGfo.
Blanca E. Bonilla previously made the documentary Dos Idiomas, Una Comunidad / (Two Languages, One Community), which sheds light on how Margarita Muniz, former Greater Boston Area teacher and former principal of the Rafael Hernandez School, played a vital role in the struggle for educating bilingual children in Massachusetts, beginning with the desegregation case of the 1970s.
The overall project also includes The Latino Pioneers in Boston Magazine, distributed to Boston Public Schools, libraries, and community organizations. Latinos Pioneers in Boston as a whole focuses on cultural identity and provides a vehicle for discussion and education about the impacts that Latinos have had in this city.
This program is presented as part of the Boston Public Library's Never Too Late Group created with older adults in mind. Due to the ample seating available in the Rabb Lecture Hall, registration is not required; instead, seating is first come, first served.
