The Kelleher Rose Garden, located in Boston’s Back Bay Fens, will be in full bloom from the beginning to the middle of June. Peak season in the Rose Garden lasts for approximately 3 weeks.
Monday – Friday 7am – 5pm and Saturday – Sunday 10am – 5pm, May through October.
The garden contains more than ten classes and 200 varieties of roses. There are almost 1,500 plants in total. Founded in 1931, the James P. Kelleher Rose Garden is part of the Emerald Necklace and is located at 70 Park Drive in Fenway. Stone dust pathways with benches navigating the gardens allow users to view the large variety of roses, cherubs, and the fountain.
A brief history of the garden:
As passion for public rose gardens swept the country in the early 1900s, landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff designed a circular formal rose garden opposite the Museum of Fine Arts in 1931. The garden was designed for the general public and rose enthusiasts alike to learn about rose culture and enjoy the flowers. The garden was an instant success. The garden was expanded in 1932 when the rectangular section was built. In 1975, the garden was named the James P. Kelleher Rose Garden to honor the Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s Superintendent of Horticulture.
