Though Charlie Chaplin gets a lot of the credit for being the most influential silent film comedian, we would also back the great Buster Keaton in contention for that title. The impact of Keaton’s stonefaced commitment to some of the most outrageous and dangerous comedic stunts in history can still be felt today – most notably in the action film stuntwork of big stars like Jackie Chan, Tom Cruise, and Keanu Reeves but also in the implacable comedic delivery of actors like Bill Murray or the intricately staged set pieces of Wes Anderson. For this series we trace Keaton’s influence over time – including a handful of gems from his starring career, a couple of cameo appearances in bonkers 1960s comedies, directors that he has influenced from Hollywood to Hong Kong, modern blockbusters by the aforementioned Cruise and Reeves, and some surprising sidetracks.
