If you are called upon to care for a loved one, practically the first thing you will hear is “make sure to take care of yourself.” Practical “how-to’s” are rarely part of this kindhearted advice. Join Katie McInnis-Dittrich, social worker, educator, and author, for a discussion of what caring for yourself really means, including how to find concrete ways to balance the demands of caregiving with your needs for self-care, so self-care doesn’t become just another burden. She will also outline how friends and community organizations can offer meaningful help and support.
Dr. Kathleen McInnis-Dittrich is a retired Associate Professor at the Boston College School of Social Work where she served as Chair of the Older Adults and Families Concentration. She received her undergraduate degree at Marquette University, her Master of Social Work at Tulane University, and her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has published extensively on social work practice and the mental health concerns of older adults, mobilizing community resources for older adults and end-of-life issues. Since retirement, she is actively involved as a Medicare counselor with the SHINE program at Ethos and as a consultant for the JP@Home and Beacon Hill Village.
This virtual program is presented in partnership by the Boston Public Library and Beacon Hill Village as part of BHV's Living Well Ending Well series. Closed captioning is available.
