Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States (June 19, 1865). Although President Lincoln issued an executive order (i.e. Emancipation Proclamation) almost two and a half years prior, slavery had not officially ended in the U.S. until Union General Granger put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, TX, announcing: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” At the time, there were still 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas. Granger’s Galveston announcement also didn’t come until after the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery had passed in Congress in early 1865.
Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 48 of the 50 U.S. states. The holiday is celebrated across the country with parades, barbecues, and more (the day was first celebrated in Austin over 150 years ago). Nationally, there is a growing movement to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. And locally, there is a small but growing number of businesses giving their employees paid time off for Juneteenth.
