Please join us for a special evening of 1930’s jump swing & blues at the Lilypad in Inman Square, featuring The Smack Dabs & Colescott and his Red Hots! $20, all ages. Don’t forget your dancing shoes!
This is the third in an exciting series of curated collaborations hosted by “The Smack Dabs”, exploring the unique connections and powerful influences between various forms of early American pre-jazz which seeded the remarkable variety of music we enjoy today.
“The Smack Dabs” specialize in good-time Swing Blues music from the 1930s and feature the songs of Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy, The Harlem Hamfats, and others.
Mark Earley, guitar, vocals, kazoo
Richard Saunders, piano
Jim Gray, upright bass
Mark Berney, cornet
Kit Buckley, saxophone, clarinet
This evening’s guest artist “Colescott and his Red Hots” are a tour-de-force trad jazz and swing unit led by Colescott Rubin, a Boston-based award winning bassist, vocalist, entertainer, dancer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and educator. He has performed in many countries, including Argentina, Spain, Iceland, & Russia, and with Grammy-winning artists Esperanza Spalding, Patrice Rushen, Catherine Russell, and John Legend, among others.
He’s currently on staff at Berklee College of Music, where he also attended on a Presidential Scholarship. Born into a musical family, Colescott performs with the Rubin Brothers regularly, who received the Boston Opportunity Fund Grant by the City of Boston last year. He plays shows and festivals in New Orleans regularly, inspired by his namesake great-grandfather Warrington Colescott Sr. who performed with Louis Armstrong 100 years ago. This year, he is recording his first three records of original music and training to join the circus.
