With their socially conscious and often tender lyrics, the all-female band is one of the most innovative and vital to emerge from Chile’s capital in recent years. Firmly grounded in the rich history of Chilean folk music, JuanaRosa
both pays homage to Violeta Parra and Victor Jara but also pushes boundaries and contemporizes the genre through their unique take on Latin American electro-pop.
Fernanda Quevedo (lead vocals, guitar, and electronic percussion), Josefa Hidalgo (bass, electric guitar, and vocals) and Daniela Salinas (keyboard, accordion, and vocals) met as music students at the University of Chile. Inspired by Latin American music, the band formed in 2015 and released their first album in 2016, featuring all original music layered over Latin rhythms. The band incorporates pop and “folktronica” influences while not losing their organic, acoustic sound. JuanaRosa released their second album, Portal, in 2021. Berklee Global Jazz member Patricia Zárate Pérez will be JuanaRosa’s special guest artist on saxophone.
The Zumix Latin Ensemble is a youth-driven group that performs music from Central and South America and their diasporas. Ranging in ages from 12 to 18, the Latin Ensemble performs music from Carlos Santana to Grupo Niche to Antonio Carlos Jobim. In addition to the youth-selected repertoire, the group also writes, arranges, and performs original songs. Directed by Brian Paulding since 2012, the Zumix Latin Ensemble has played all around Boston, including performances at Festival on the Farm (Canton, Massachusetts), The Coolidge Corner Theater, and the Boston Children's Museum. They have shared stages with Eguie Castrillo, Debo Band, and Jimmy Bosch.
