This unique program will center around jazz albeit with a Swedish twist. The Råmark Duo are Swedish born flugelhorn player Oskar Stenmark and Swedish born bassist Bruno Råberg. Sunniva Brynnel, who also hails from Sweden and is currently based in Boston while attending the New England Conservatory, will perform with her jazz trio.

In Gärdebyn, Dalecarlia, you will find an important and ancient music tradition. The small Swedish village has been a cultural hub for over two hundred years. Oskar Stenmark, a flugelhorn player, is the tenth generation in his family to pass on this tradition, much thanks to his (paternal) grandmother Elsie Börjes who grew up in Gärdebyn. Elsie went on a U.S. tour with a group of fiddlers in 1956, when she was only 17 years old. 62 years later Oskar revives the music that has taken him to Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston. Together with the great Swedish bass player and Boston local Bruno Råberg, the group performs polskas, waltzes and folk songs mixed with a contemporary expression and sounds from New York.

Swedish singer and accordionist Sunniva Brynnel brings together her jazz trio with alto sax player Nathan Reising (US) and pianist Andrew Boudreau (Canada).

The three met as Masters students of improvisation at the New England Conservatory – NEC. Having run the jazz jam at Coffee shop Farmer Horse for a year, the trio embarked on a poetry project – writing original music to texts from around the world. During the spring, this music has been performed as part of a NEC Community Outreach project, and now the trio is looking forward to taking it to the Arts at the Armory Cafe.

Their program will feature texts by writers such as Shel Silverstein, Kahlil Gibran and Karin Boye.
