Canciones Románticas, Boleros y más! Join us for Latin American popular and classical hits from the past decades with Juan Carlos Ruiz on vocals and guitar and Josaphat Roberto Contreras on vocals and piano.


Registration is not required but the limited amount of seating is first come, first served. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the Rabb Lecture Hall.


Juan Carlos Ruiz is a Venezuelan artist, economist, entrepreneur, and TEDx Speaker. He holds a Master of Science in Operation Research and a Master of Business Administration. Since 2016, he has resided in Boston, Massachusetts, where he has performed concerts in several cities across the U.S. and abroad.


Ruiz won the Global Music Award twice in 2022 and was a semifinalist at "Premios de la Música Independiente of Spain." He is a member of The Latin Recording Academy® and The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.


First generation Latinx tenor Josaphat Contreras grew up in Alief, Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2022, Josaphat graduated from the master’s degree program in Voice Pedagogy from The New England Conservatory of Music whose research encompasses mariachi repertoire and mariachi singing.


Currently, Josaphat is employed by the Eleonor England studio in Manhattan, New York where he teaches a variety of styles within his students that include classical, mariachi, musical theatre, pop, rock and folk music.


Most recently, Josaphat won the first place award for his poster presentation at the National Opera Association 2023 convention which was entitled "Can opera be folk music? The historical connection and theoretical application between opera and Mexican Mariachi Folk Music". Josaphat has had his research presented at Houston Grand Opera insights pre-concert lecture, the National Opera Association, Lawrence Academy, a mariachi panel held by the University of Illinois - Springfield in conjunction with NPR Illinois, and at the mariachi educators workshop at Arizona State University.
