February 25, 2022: Joe Sumner releases “You You You,” a brand new single from his forthcoming album, Sunshine In The Night, to be released later this year.
“You You You,” finds Sumner descanting regret and redemption like a guy who’s lived a bit. Sings Joe, “I know I was the one who hurt you first/It started as a lie and it got much worse/I did so much wrong I can’t fit it in this verse,” indeed earnest, but not above a cheeky self-referential line. The chorus then simply asks ‘what can I do to fix this?’ It’s a classic narrative device, but it’s all in the way that you use it, and Sumner uses it well. We walk on believing that hope truly does exist.
“You You You” possesses the same yearning, ebullient vibe as the album’s first single, “Hope,” which enjoyed a top shelf roll out, excerpted for a star-studded VIDEO to coincide with the 2020 general election featuring chime-ins from, among others, Ben Folds, Juliana Hatfield, Gaby Moreno, Fantastic Negrito, Richard Marx, Southside Johnny, Patti Scialfa, Joe’s dad (Sting) and Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, who aired on the show, while Rolling Stone premiered the song in its entirety.
We can tell you now that his debut album to be released later this year, Sunshine In The Night offers 11 more opportunities for that heartfelt lift– commonly shared emotions presented as memorable, melodious, larger-than-life rock missives calibrated for appreciation and atonement.
