The Tim Ray Trio with Terri Lyne Carrington and John Lockwood performs at Starlight Square in Cambridge’s Central Square Cultural District on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at 6:30 p.m. This live jazz performance is presented by the Cambridge Jazz Foundation, Cambridge Arts and Producer/Creative Director Shelley Neill.
While the foundation’s 2021 Cambridge Jazz Festival has been postponed to 2022 due to the covid pandemic, the foundation is producing this free, one-night live performance.
Ray is a long-time pianist for Lyle Lovett and currently Tony Bennett’s pianist and musical director. He’s performed with Aretha Franklin, Kurt Elling, Gary Burton, Esperanza Spalding, Bonnie Raitt, Soul Asylum and the Boston Pops. And he’s played on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and later Jay Leno, “Late Night with David Letterman,” and “The Conan O’Brien Show.”
Carrington is a multiple Grammy Award–winning drummer and producer. She has collaborated with Esperanza Spalding and recorded and toured with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn and Diana Krall. She was the first woman to win a Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for “Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue,” a reimagining of the Duke Ellington classic. She is Founder and Artistic Director of Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. She is also the Zildjian Chair in Performance at the college in Boston.
Bassist Lockwood has toured with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Gary Burton, the Mel Lewis Big Band, and The Fringe. He has also performed with the Boston Pops, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz, and Art Farmer.
