The Italian Wine Scholar™ education program is the most advanced, comprehensive, and up-to-date Italian wine course available. The syllabus takes a regional approach and discusses all Italian wine appellations and the factors that shape their identities.
The program provides committed students of wine with an unparalleled set of study tools that are designed to maximize learning and boost knowledge retention. It was created by native Italian, Maurizio Broggi, DipWSET, FWS, CSW with the support of the Italian wine DOC/G consortia. The Italian Trade Commission (ITA) endorsed the program in recognition of its exceptional level of depth, accuracy, detail, and academic rigor.
The Italian Wine Scholar program is composed of two separate units:
Unit 1: Northern Italy
Unit 2: Central and Southern Italy
Note: Unit 1 and 2 can be taken in any order
The Italian Wine Scholar study and certification program confers a post-nominal to wine professionals and enthusiasts who successfully pass the certification exams (Ex: John Smith, IWS). With a school network encompassing 30 countries on 5 continents, the IWS credential has true international recognition.
Set yourself apart from your peers. Specialize in the wines of Italy!
UNIT 2: WINES OF CENTRAL and SOUTHERN ITALY
The program includes all the necessary tools and support to fully understand the wines of Italy:
Our sessions will include 15 hours of classroom instruction plus a review session and exam day, with tutored tasting taught by approved instructor, Jo-Ann Ross, DipWSET, IWS, FWS:
The 218-page full-color Italian Wine Scholar Unit 2 study manual
1-year access to the Italian Wine Scholar Unit 2 online study program for class preparation and review
Registration for the Italian Wine Scholar Unit 2 Exam
In order to bring each region to life, you will also taste a total of many different wines over the course of the program.
Students register for each Unit separately. We highly recommend that students complete one Unit before moving on to the next. The Italian Wine Scholar™ credential/pin is based on the final composite score (Unit 1and2). This format makes it much easier to retain information and to pass the exams.
You can choose to take this class in person at Commonwealth Wine School or online streaming through Zoom. Tastings are provided as part of the in person class. A list of suggested wines will be provided for students who choose to join from home, prior to class so that you can taste along. The exam must be taken in person at Commonwealth Wine School.
Cost: $695 Online / $795 in-Person (in-person option includes tastings)
