Jazz composer and pianist Ivan Dalia comes to the Lily Pad from Milan, Italy. Blind from birth, in 2006 he played with jazz harmonica legend Toots Thielemans, which set him on his path in the jazz world. Dalia draws inspiration from classical and jazz greats, and the rich folk traditions of southern Italy.
In 2010 Dalia moved to Berlin where he made his name as a jazz piano soloist and ensemble leader, as part of that city’s underground scene. Dalia also composes for the screen and created the soundtrack for “ROSAS” by artist Marinella Senatore in 2011. But it was in 2016 that Dalia received widespread recognition when he appeared on Italy’s Got Talent television show, captivating judges and audience with his deconstructed jazz compositions and bittersweet irony.
In 2017 Italy’s National Newspaper, La Repubblica, wrote, “30 years old, six feet tall, with a crown of wild hair, Ivan Dalia was awarded the Napoli Prize for Excellence in Music. Accepting the award, Dalia said. ‘I’m blind, but don’t tell me I can’t see.’ Dalia presented the nationally televised 22nd Louis Braille Awards show in 2017, and received the Cimitile Award for Music that same year, performing to great acclaim at the Pozzuoli Jazz Festival. Dalia’s previous visit to the U.S. featured his solo piano at New York City’s famed jazz club, the Zinc Bar.
Listen to him on May 8 on Ken Field's New Edge jazz live radio on WMBR 88.1 FM 2-4 p.m. or at http://wmbr.org/newedge/
