On June 15, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum will host Urban Renaissance: Alternative Visions of a City through Street Art, Creative Economy and Community, presented in partnership with Street Theory, to celebrate the launch of new murals in The Underground Mural Project at Ink Block, curated by Street Theory and National Development. Hosted in the Gardner Museum’s Calderwood Hall, Urban Renaissance will feature a panel talk-back, DJ performance by Gucci Vuitton, multi-media installation, and will explore street art’s role in the creative economy and its impact on urban communities.
Originally unveiled in 2017, the Underground Mural Project at Ink Block transforms more than 100,000 square feet of Boston’s underutilized walls into a unique urban park and visual playground. On June 29, the 2019 Mural Project will introduce eight new murals to the park from local, national and internationally renowned street artists. The immense art project is presented by National Development and curated by the creative agency Street Theory, whose co-founder Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez is one of the Gardner Museum’s Neighborhood Salon Luminaries.
Marka27’s work has become part of graffiti and street art history, but he has flourished as a product designer, gallery artist, toy designer, and more. With paintings, murals, drawings, mixed-media pieces, and commissions for major brands, his robust palette blends elements of street and pop culture with Mexican and indigenous aesthetics—a signature look the artist has coined “Neo Indigenous.”
Street Theory’s Underground Mural Project Launch // Urban Renaissance is a part of larger series of Community Engagement Amplifier Projects at the Gardner Museum which seek to highlight change-makers working towards social justice through the arts. The Urban Renaissance event is inspired by themes from the Gardner Museum’s upcoming exhibition Big Plans: Picturing Social Reform, which explores the history of parks and public spaces, and how artists and designers are addressing the contemporary urban challenges and social conditions of our time.
Panelists at Urban Renaissance will include:
- Ash Chan, Founder, The Container Yard
- Claudia De Piante Vicin, Creative Director, Dana Farber
- Liza and Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez, Artists and Founders, Street Theory
