Is America Losing Our Miracle Machine?

Federal investment in basic research has led to landmark scientific breakthroughs ranging from the creation of the Internet to mapping the human genome. The investment that powers America’s “Miracle Machine” has also created millions of jobs within the US, given birth to entire new industries, and serves as a metric for what we value as a society. Eric Lander, president and founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, is one of many voices within the scientific community who’s pushing against federal cuts in science and technology research funding in order to preserve the United States’ status as a global hub for innovation. Dr. Lander joins the MIT Communications Forum for a moderated discussion on ethical issues entangled in the future of research funding.

Eric Lander is president and founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. A MacArthur Fellowship recipient, Lander was a principal leader of the Human Genome Project and served as co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology for President Barack Obama. He is currently a professor of biology at MIT and professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School.
