About this workshop:
From your Amazon homepage to getting directions in Google Maps, data science is used everywhere, and jobs that require knowledge and use of data analysis tools and techniques have more than doubled over the past few years.
This workshop is a gentle, hands-on introduction to exploratory data analysis and machine learning in Python. Exploratory data analysis (or EDA, for short) is the first step in any data science workflow, when the data scientist dives into the data and forms the hypotheses and research questions that will guide the direction of the rest of the project.
Machine learning is a later step in the data science workflow where predictions are made and insights are extracted from data in an automated fashion.
During this class, we will cover the specifics of Python’s pandas module for data munging and analysis, and scikit-learn for machine learning. We will also create visualizations using matplotlib, and we will use a Jupyter notebook to tie it all together in an elegant & compelling data story.
Goals:
After completing this workshop, you will be able to:
- do data analysis using Python’s pandas module
- generate clear visualizations using matplotlib
- gain a working understanding of at least one machine learning model
- use Jupyter notebooks to create a complete and compelling data story.
Prerequisites:
- students should have a basic familiarity with the Python programming language
- please install the Anaconda distribution on your laptop before class
- please bring your laptop for this class
About the instructor:
Claudia Virlanuta
Claudia is a Data Scientist and the founder of Data Science Jungle, an education company dedicated to training the Data Scientists of tomorrow and helping to close the data science skills gap. Prior to starting DSJ, Claudia earned her degree in Economics from Yale, and worked in biotech, marketing technology, and most recently in ecommerce, on Wayfair’s Data Science team. She is a passionate advocate for diversity in tech, and she is also the founder of Data Women, a Boston-area group for women in Data Science and Analytics.
