ILLUMINUS, Boston’s festival of light, art, and technology, is back after a multiyear hiatus! Free and open to the public, ILLUMINUS Dorchester showcases the brilliant talents of four artists who call the neighborhood home; each is presenting new multimedia works that will transform the old tire shop on Dorchester Ave with projection mapping, sculptural installations, and live interactive performances.
The cohort artists include:
Azia Carle: A proud lifelong resident of Dorchester, Azia is a painter and creative spirit who draws inspiration from her community and her family heritage. Azia’s installation is a playful and nostalgic exploration of joy, memory, and neighborhood as experienced through the five senses.
Makeda Wallace: Makeda is a multitalented creative and decorated movement artist who is drawing on her background of dancehall and hip hop to collaborate with local dancers, musicians, and visual programers to create an immersive, interactive, and healing dance performance based on the four elements.
PeeJay Clarke: PeeJay is an elementary school teacher, storyteller and musician. His love of roleplaying games and representation has inspired him to create an immersive adventure that brings visitors to an African port city around the year 1000AD where magic mixes with fact, and everyone’s history is celebrated.
Sam Lê Shave: Sam, born and raised in Dorchester, is a Vietnamese-American artist working with paint and textiles who is using this project to develop a healing environment of embroidery, mirrors, projection, and sound that expresses care for community mental health and queries how pain can be transcended to love.
In addition to the installations by the cohort artists, ILLUMINUS Dorchester will present The Dorchester Time Machine, an immersive journey through the neighborhood’s past, present, and future created in collaboration with Artists For Humanity.
