In Neither In Nor Out, Hilde-Kari Guttormsen uses vessels to investigate the relationship between biological and cultural evolution, the fluidity of nature, and the human condition. She sculpts her vessels by handweaving metal wire and applying a traditional metalwork technique used by Vikings in her native Norway. The weaving process is time-consuming yet meditative and represents a true labor of love.  Exploring the inherent language of the medium, the artist weaves together her respect for the nature of the material with her knowledge of an expanded range of craft and sculptural practices. Through her combination of traditional techniques and everyday materials, Guttormsen offers viewers relatable objects of beauty.
