We’ll be bagging a few peaks in the northern part of Baxter State Park, Traveler Mountain, North Traveler Mountain, and Peak of the Ridges. The starfished-shaped mountain range is very strenuous, but offers incredible views on each of the respective summits and the ridgeline. These mountains were once volcanic mountains and may be the largest in the east coast, with explosions similar to that of Mount St. Helen’s. While the elevation of these mountains aren’t extremely high, the hike will be about 3,675 ft. of elevation gain with scrambling and a significant amount of time above treeline, comparable to the difficulty of Katahdin. We’ll be ascending via the Center Ridge trail and descending via the North Traveler trail. The trail ascends significantly once we get onto the Traveller Trail towards Peak of the Ridges and through a section called the “Little Knife Edge” before reaching the Traveler Summit. Incredible views are found through these sections. After the Traveler Summit, the trail drops significantly to a col before ascending again towards North Traveler Summit. The trail drops after the summit back towards South Branch Pond. The total distance of the hike will be 11.1 miles. The plan will be to camp Friday through Sunday and do the hike on Saturday.
Reservations have already been made for the weekend. We'll be camping at South Branch Pond Campground at Baxter State Park which can fit 6 people and 2 cars.
