Mount Bigelow Avery and West Peaks are two 4,000 footers located in the Bigelow Range in Western Maine. Avery Peak is 4,090 ft., while West Peak is 4,145 ft. We'll be camping at the Round Barn Campsite, which is on Flagstaff Lake and hike the next morning. The trailhead is located across the road from the campsite. We'll be hiking to both summits via the Safford Brook and Appalachian Trails, totaling 9.5 miles. The following morning, we have the option to explore the Bigelow Preserve or the surrounding which has a lot of natural beauty before heading back. Note: Round Barn Campsite is a primitive campsite due to conservation efforts by the state of Maine to preserve the natural beauty of the area. There are restrooms located in the parking area of the campsite, but there is no running water. Flagstaff Lake will be a source of water, but will need to be filtered and boiled before using. All campsites at Round Barn Campsite are free, lowering the overall cost of this adventure.
Previous hiking experience is required, preferably with at least 2,500 ft. of elevation gain.
Note: Only sign up for this adventure if you know you can go on the hike. Signing up for the hike then flaking at the last minute can impact another person's ability to join the adventure. Signing up then flaking last minute will impact your ability to sign up for future adventures. Drivers will be compensated for gas and travel by driving riders to and from the trailhead. Thank you so much for making these adventures possible!
