Old Speck Mountain is a 4,170 foot mountain in the Mahoosuc Range in Oxford County, Maine. It is also part of the Eastern White Mountains that stretches from New Hampshire to Maine. It is the highest mountain in the range, and the 4th highest mountain in the state of Maine. There are 360 degree views from top of the fire tower at the summit and a total 6.6 miles of hiking with 2847 feet of elevation gain.

If you're looking to climb New England's 67 highest, then this one's for you! You must have previous 4,000 footer experience, and you'll definitely need microspikes and other cold-weather gear. Do not make this hike your first. If you're unsure about winter hiking, take one of the winter hiking classes going on every week!

Gear

1) microspikes (not YakTrax or anything with beads)

2) non-cotton pants and shirt

3) waterproof (not "resistant") core and pants

4) hiking boots (no trail runners at this point - too wet on the trail from ice/water)

5) 2 - 3 liters of water to be tucked into your bag to keep from freezing

6) food with plenty of calories

7) electrolyte replacement

8) Map of this hike: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/maine/old-speck-mountain-trail

Requirements:

As stated above, do not make this your first hike, and you must have 4,000 footer experience in either the Adirondacks or the White Mountains. If your Ridj-it profile does not have other experience listed, you must write it in the Ridj-it comments section. You will be vetted 100% and turned away if you show up to carpool or the trail head without the right gear. I am not a professional guide nor will be one during this trip; if you are unable to keep up with the group, we will do everything in our power to work together as a team to help you. If this does not prove to work, then you will be asked to make your way back down the mountain (which is totally cool since this is an out-and-back hike). We will stick together as a group, so do not sign up if you are looking to trail run. Please keep in mind a pace of about 1.5 - 2 mph.
