Q: How do you make a small fortune in wine?
A: You start with a large fortune.
There is a fundamental truth to this joke – making wine is expensive. And you can’t fault vignerons for wanting to run successful businesses. Unfortunately, this has led to winemakers planting commercially attractive grapes, tending toward monoculture and focusing on optimizing certain qualities – color, aromas, flavor profiles and above all, marketability. While this has led to many wonderful and even great wines, it has also led to a loss of diversity and sometimes of tradition.
In this class, we will explore wines that seek to revive old vines of established varieties, field blends that can sometimes be a bit unpredictable but can also lead to unexpectedly beautiful wines, and of vines that are un-grafted and provide a “pre-phylloxera” glimpse of how wine used to taste.
This class will be held Online through Zoom. Tasting Kits are available for pick up at our school if you select the Online with Tasting Kit registration option. If you would like your kit shipped to you, please pay for shipping here. For those who wish to purchase their own wines, lists will be provided ahead of time so that you may taste along at home.
