Go to Your Womb explores birth, childhood, the tug-of-war of mother-child dynamics, and the particular worries that swirl around raising a daughter in a culture fraught with violence against women. And then there is the eternal tension of parenting — wanting to return our kids to the womb (i.e., protect them forever) versus our responsibility to raise them well, set them free, and manage our own grief and worries about their passage.
This show is for anyone who has ever grappled with the existential crises inherent to being a parent — or to having one. Go to Your Womb provides an opportunity to embrace a collective healing — and to laugh. A lot. Prepare for catharsis by way of a PG-13 acid trip.
Act 1: Adelia’s birth story. Adelia will play her father, the nurses, the doctor, and some random hikers Toni came across while meditating in a park in the midst of labor. This act culminates in the pair’s first push-me-pull-you shared experience, Adelia’s birth, spoken through the language of interpretive dance.
Act 2: The art of raising a human. Every parent’s dilemma: Civilize our children — without stifling who they are and robbing them of their feral beauty. This act will explore how to raise a human who is an asset to society but also true to herself. Roles will reverse on stage (as they do in life), as Adelia teaches Toni what authenticity means. This act explores how we tend to parent our own inner child and be the parent we wish we’d had — only to later discover how to become the parent our child needs.
Act 3: The heartbreak of mortality. Step aside, dreamy haze of childhood. Make way for the stormy weather of hormones. In this act, Adelia and Toni will perform stand-up sets roasting one another. As Adelia enters her tween years, both she and Toni are whipsawed by her hormonal change and high emotion. The power struggle is on. Spoiler alert: Adelia wins.
