Celebrate the opening of our new exhibition Gio Swaby: Fresh Up!
Artist Gio Swaby uses sewing, appliqué and fabric choice (including Androsia Batik from the Bahamas) to portray the individual personalities and fashion choices of women in her family and close social circle. “My work is a love letter to Black women and Black girls,” she says. Her vibrant portraits celebrate the nuanced ways in which the subjects express themselves.
“Fresh up” is a Bahamian phrase often used as a way to compliment someone’s style or confident way of being. “It holds a lot of positivity and joy,” Swaby says. “ It also speaks to the tone of confidence and power that I want to create with these works.” Read more about the exhibition here.
