KABINETT, the South End’s newest gallery, is pleased to present the first exhibition in Boston of New York-based artist Jeannie Weissglass. The exhibition, “The Secret Life of Porcupines,” will be on view from May 6th through June 14th.
The opening reception is open to the public and will take place on Saturday, May 6, from 6 to 9 pm.
Two large drawings of porcupines—one supporting a horse and armor-clad rider, the other with a black-booted woman riding amidst the quills—preside over the second exhibition at the South End gallery. The mostly smaller-format paintings and works on paper exhibited present Weissglass’s revisionist take on American colonial sin, exploring the turbulent waters of that period and its resonances in the current political climate. Imagined narratives involving Martha and George Washington amuse with X-rated commentary that will probably never make it into any history syllabus; in other works, disembodied skulls and animals watch over powerful if sometimes playful depictions of female sexuality. The porcupine’s buoyancy (each of its 30,000 or more quills is filled with air when engaged) is symbolic of the ability to stay “above water”—and indeed, the lush colors and imaginative, playful imagery of Weissglass’s assured hand offer a measure of quirky comfort in our uncertain times.
Jeannie Weissglass was born in Morristown, NJ and studied at the New York Studio School, The Fashion Institute of Technology (New York), and L’École des Arts Décoratifs (Nice, FR). She has displayed work at Artist’s Space, Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, Gasser Grunert, and Farrell Pollack Fine Arts, and her work has been featured in several recent group shows, including Cliffhanger at The Royal Society of American Art in 2014, Paper Reveries at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center in 2015 and Grammar at Coustof Waxman and Micro-Salon 7 at Galerie L’Inlassable in Paris, both in 2017. Her most recent solo exhibitions were Riptide: Journeys in Early Americana and Beyond at Cathouse FUNeral, and Astro-Bloom, curated by Suzy Spence, The Gallery @1GAP, both in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been noted in The Village Voice, Elle Decor, NY Arts Magazine, and in the January 2017 issue of Blouin ArtInfo.
