Duo Maresienne (Carol Lewis, viola da gamba; Olav Chris Henriksen, Baroque lute and English guitar) will perform a very special concert of newly rediscovered masterpieces (and a few old favorites) from 18th-century Germany. Entitled “Gallant Fantasies”, the program will include instrumental solos and duos by the most creative German composers including Telemann, Abel, Lidl, Baron and Weiss. This is the final concert in the 2016-17 season of Music for Viols and Friends, and it will take place Thursday April 27 at 8:00 pm in Lindsay Chapel, First Church in Cambridge, Congregational, 11 Garden St. (N.B.: Entrance on Mason St.) Admission is $25 general admission, $20 students, seniors and low income. For further information, call (617) 776-0692, or go to www.duomaresienne.com
Composers in Germany during the 18th century often used the fantasy, a free form, as a kind of model for showing off their musical creativity. Telemann, Baron, Weiss and Straube displayed their skills in fantasies that were like long, well-developed preludes, sometimes having contrasting sections (like a sonata). Recently a long-lost set of twelve fantasies for unaccompanied viola da gamba by Telemann was rediscovered in Germany. This, together with other recent discoveries of manuscripts of music for Baroque lute and viola da gamba, was the inspiration for this program of “new” late Baroque music. The concert will also feature sonatas for viola da gamba and basso continuo by Telemann and Abel and by the virtuoso viol performer and composer Lidl.
Carol Lewis and Olav Chris Henriksen are two of America’s leading early musicians, whose unique repertoire and unusual range has led them to perform frequently in recitals individually and together, as well as with internationally acclaimed ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Camerata, Capriccio Stravagante, Waverly Consort, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and Hespèrion XXI. Critics have praised Duo Maresienne’s performances, calling their playing “brilliantly florid” and “powerful and vibrant”.
