Join us for a brisk, warming night hike through the dunes of the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Transformed and illuminated by the glow of the full moon reflected off the snow, the dunes are an eerily beautiful landscape.
At the time of this almost-spring Moon, the ground begins to soften and earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of robins. This is also known as the Sap Moon, as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins.
Bring water and dress for the weather to maximize comfort. You are welcome to bring a flashlight or headlamp, but we may ask for moments of total darkness to fully enjoy the moon and the shadows it makes on the dunes.
Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand (which makes for a more strenuous hike), for approximately 3½-4 miles.
Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible and issued full refunds.
The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and river boat trips will be emailed to registrants the day before the event at the address provided upon registration. If you prefer to have this information over the phone, please call us using the contact information provided at the right.
