Tuesday, August 15, 5:30 p.m. reception, 6:00 p.m. lecture
Otis House, 141 Cambridge Street, Boston, Mass.
Take a trip through the history of one of Boston’s most colorful and infamous institutions, the Charles Street Jail, with award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker Joe McMaster. Using historic images gathered for his recent book Charles Street Jail, McMaster tells the story of this Boston landmark, from its idealistic, forward-thinking design in the middle of the nineteenth century; to its disgraceful court-ordered closure in the late twentieth century; to its stunning, twenty-first century renovation and transformation into a luxury hotel.
Along the way, meet some of the many surprising, historically significant, and sometimes unsavory inmates who called the Charles Street Jail home during its nearly 150 years of continuous use. You won't be able to look at this stunning building the same way again.
This is the final lecture in our annual Twilight Talks series, a partnership with the Victorian Society of America/New England chapter and Historic New England.
