Curtain Up! Directed by Hui Tong and Kelly Ng, follows elementary school kids in New York's Chinatown as they prepare for the musical production of "Frozen Kids" and begin to discover their identities. Behind the scenes, they face Asian stereotypes, families’ expectations and uncertainties post-graduation. It is through rehearsing for this American favorite that these kids come to grapple with their Chinese roots.

Artist Bios
Hui Tong, Director
Hui Tong is a documentary filmmaker from Beijing and currently based in Beijing. Six years ago he came to the U.S. for college and developed a strong interest in the intersection of history, arts, and identity. He has been making narrative and documentary shorts since high school, and in writing covered Asian American identity issues. Curtain Up! is his first feature-length documentary.
Kelly Ng, Director
Kelly Ng is a multimedia journalist from Singapore drawn particularly to stories on minority communities, education and mental health. Her video and written stories have been published on The Atlantic, NBC, and South China Morning Post, among others. She is currently a correspondent at Singapore’s The Business Times, and formerly spent five years at TODAY, also a local paper. Curtain Up! is her filmmaking debut.
Alison Yeuming Qu, Moderator
A 1.5 generation immigrant originally from Jilin City, China, Alison Yueming Qu (she/they) is a director, dramaturg, and curator of bilingual new immigrant spaces, audiences, mad conversations, and fun. Alison is the Co-Founder & Executive Producer of CHUANG Stage—the first Mandarin-English bilingual, bicultural theater collective nationwide based in Boston, MA, producing programs for both local and global audiences. Alison works with Company One Theatre previously as the Associate Producer of the Boston Chinatown Musical project by Kit Yan & Melissa Li, and now as the Connectivity Producer.
