Mayor Thomas P. Koch and the City of Quincy will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the Tirrell Room located at 254 Quarry St. in Quincy. Former Boston Police Department Commissioner William Gross will serve as keynote speaker.
In 2014, Mayor Marty Walsh and Commissioner William Evans appointed Gross to the position of Superintendent-in-Chief, the highest-ranking sworn police officer in the Boston Police Department, making him the first African American to hold that rank in the department’s long history. Four years later Gross was appointed Commissioner, becoming the first person of color to lead the department. Commissioner Gross has been recognized throughout his career for his service, receiving numerous awards including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award.
“Commissioner Gross, throughout his career, has led with a goal of unity for the community he has served and beyond,” Mayor Koch said. “In the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy, Willie inspires an unwavering commitment to equality and respect for all.”
