Join us for the opening reception of Phyllis Ewen's INUNDATION , David Abel's Inundation District , and Mira Cantor's When we were starfish... at Kingston Gallery in Boston's SOWA Arts District!

Light refreshments will be provided along with the chance to talk to Linda, Bonnie, and Vaughn about their exhibitions!

Main Gallery

Phyllis Ewen: INUNDATION

In Phyllis Ewen’s INUNDATION, imagination and memories interact with the natural world. Maps, charts, and photographs combine to create sculptural drawings– three-dimensional reliefs– inspired by the many forces that shape the earth's surface. Ewen scans charts and weather maps, then alters them in Photoshop, and prints these images. They are then reassembled to form imagined coastal images with the effects of anthropogenic global warming. The works in this exhibition evoke the rising waters flooding our coasts and relationships with the ocean.

While maps typically imply that viewers are looking down at the earth, Ewen’s work invites viewers to place themselves in these landscapes and inhabit the seas as another way of understanding our relationship to land and sea.

Phyllis Ewen lives in Massachusetts, with studios in Somerville and Wellfleet. Her art is in public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the DeCordova Museum, the Boston Public Library, Harvard University, the Reykjanes Museum of Art, and numerous corporate and private collections. She is a gallery artist at Kingston Gallery in Boston and AIR in Brooklyn. This is her second exhibit in the main gallery at Kingston and had a show last year in the Project Space. Ewen’s work has been shown widely, including a well-received three-person exhibition at Reykjanes Museum of Art in Iceland, Við Sjónarrönd/Above And Below The Horizon.

Center Gallery:

David Abel: Inundation District

Accompanying Phyllis Ewen’s INUNDATION, is Inundation District, a film by David Abel in the Center Gallery, exhibiting a four-minute trailer. Inundation District is an award-winning feature-length film about the implications of Boston’s decision to ignore the threats posed by climate change and spend billions of dollars on building a new waterfront district — on landfill, at sea level. Unlike other places imperiled by climate change, the Seaport in Boston, with its glass towers housing some of the world’s largest companies, was built well after scientists began warning of the threats, including many at its renowned universities. Boston, which already has more high-tide flooding than nearly any other in the United States, called its new quarter the Innovation District. But with seas rising inexorably, and at an accelerating rate, others are calling the neighborhood by a different name: Inundation District.

The Project Space Gallery:

Mira Cantor: When we were starfish…

Mira Cantor’s newest works on paper investigate the connections between humanity and nature. Drawing from Cantor’s interest in Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man and working with starfish fossils in the Burren in Ireland, these works employ starfish imagery to evoke the human figure. The starfish, with its five limbs and connection to the Fibonacci number 5, can also be applied to the human body. Like humans, starfish have complex nervous systems, they can walk across the ocean floor, and can even feel pain. Perhaps the five limbs of a starfish harken to humanity’s beginnings and are a precursor to da Vinici’s famous study of the human body.
