Puerto Rican-born Edmar Colón is a saxophonist, pianist, and composer. As a saxophonist, Colón has performed worldwide, including at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and Monterey Jazz Festival, among others. He performed and toured alongside artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Ledisi, Judith Hill, and Danny Rivera. Colón has also performed with John Patitucci, Bob Moses, Joe Lovano, Danilo Pérez, Kenny Werner, David Sanchez, Arturo Sandoval, and George Garzone, among others. Edmar was awarded first prize at the "Keep An Eye" International Jazz Awards in Amsterdam as a part of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. In 2016, Colón was awarded the “El Mundo Boston Latino 30 Under 30 Award”.
As a composer, arranger, and orchestrator, Colón’s work includes being the copyist for Wayne Shorter’s opera, Iphigenia; being commissioned to write an orchestral piece for the Detroit Jazz Festival Symphony Orchestra honoring pianist Geri Allen; writing orchestrations on Esperanza Spalding’s GRAMMY Award-winning album,“12 Little Spells,” as well as copying/arranging for the Kennedy Center Honors Award ceremony honoring Wayne Shorter. In the fall of 2019, Edmar arranged and orchestrated a commission consisting of 16 orchestral pieces for the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, celebrating the centennial of Nat King Cole on a production entitled Nat King Cole at 100.
Colón is a long-time collaborator with NEA Jazz master, multi-Grammy Award winner, drummer, and composer Terri Lyne Carrington. Some highlight collaborations include arranging/orchestrating forthe acclaimed GRAMMY-nominated album “Waiting Game” (2018) and arranging/orchestrating for the GRAMMY-Winning album “New Standards” (2022). More works out of this collaboration include: writing/performing for a show entitled “Sing The Truth”at the Hollywood Bowl, co-writing the score for the ESPN documentary film “Play: More Than A Game”, arranging and orchestrating a large-scale multimedia work entitled “Seen/Unseen; Explorations, Interrogations and Resilience” recently performed at the SFJazz Center. In 2022, Edmar was the “Contributing Editor” on Carrington’s groundbreaking new book “New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers.”
In May 2022, Edmar completed a commission for the legendary Boston POPS, where he re-imagined Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol’s “Caravan.” In 2023, the POPS commissioned and debuted a brand new symphonic work by Colón titled “Fantasy In Blue.” Edmar’s most recent completed orchestral work is a bold, nearly 30-minute-long, re-imagination of the ever-classic Rhapsody In Blue (G. Gershwin). It was released to critical acclaim on the leading classical music label Pentatone, commissioned by the international pianist Lara Downes.
Recently, Colón wrote a four-movement saxophone concerto for the Boston POPS and legendary saxophonist Branford Marsalis which premiered in May 2024.
Additionally, Edmar Colón will soon release four recorded projects with him as a saxophonist; one of these works will feature the legendary Puerto Rican vocalist Danny Rivera. Colón currently serves as a full-time associate professor at the world-renowned Berklee College Of Music in Boston, MA.
