Join Fruitlands in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Latinx Music Ambassadors Sol y Canto with a sextet performance under the Fruitlands event tent on September 19th.
Sol y Canto
Founded in 1994, Sol y Canto is the Boston Music Award-winning jazz-tinged Latin folk music ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions, Sol y Canto’s original songs are socially conscious and hopeful, set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. Described by the Boston Globe as “sublime ambassadors of Latin music,” they translate their Spanish lyrics poetically to make their music accessible to all. They can make you dance, laugh, cry and sigh all in one concert. They are also known for getting audiences to sing along to beloved Latin classics as well as whimsical vocal improvisation numbers that are spontaneously created with the audience.
With Brian’s commanding, intricate guitar playing, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos, their trademark soul-stirring rich vocal harmonies and liberal use of vocal improvisation and body percussion, the duo’s sound is lush. On September 19th they will be joined by band members cellist Queralt Giralt (Spain) on cello and Keala Kaumeheiwa (U.S.) on acoustic bass, along with special guests Bernardo Monk (Argentina) on saxophone, and tenor and Central American ocarina player Alan del Castillo (Puerto Rico).
To mark their 30th anniversary, they are recording a new album, Sol y Canto’s sixth which will be released on September 20th, 2024. The title track, “En tu órbita”, was released as a single earlier this year and can be heard on all digital platforms here. The video of the song was highlighted by NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest newsletter! The video can be seen here. Their website is: www.solycanto.com and their YouTube channel is www.youtube.com/solycanto
