Local organizations and individual supporters across Massachusetts are coming together in support of Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter being wrongfully detained in Russia, and the protection of journalists and press freedom, with a benefit concert at Taffeta, a music venue in Lowell, MA on Friday, June 23. The event will feature performances by some of the hottest new names in indie rock, “Berklee’s buzziest band” (WBUR) Little Fuss; 2023 Boston Calling hometown hero Blue Light Bandits; and “one of America’s best young bands” (Rolling Stone) and Rolling Stone’s 2022 Hot Band Mom Rock, who has amassed millions of streams and opened for bands like Sister Hazel and Switchfoot.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Gershkovich family and the Committee to Protect Journalists. “ Record numbers of journalists are in prison…Growing authoritarianism has shrunk the political optimism and blossoming of independent media during the 1990s and journalism, which needs democracy and rule of law to thrive “is now losing both.” (Robert Mahoney, CPJ.org)
Local supporters include Taffeta Music, QRST’s Apparel Printer, Omni Print, Tremonte Pizzeria and Ice Bar, Fuse Bistro, Little Delights, Cotton & Coffee, among others.
