The announcement that Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature was controversial, naysayers challenged the notion that this singer/songwriter is as 'literary' or as important as the work of traditional poets, novelists, and playwrights. Join Professor Barents to hear and discuss songs from different periods of Dylan's career, and see how Dylan's lyrics compare favorably to the very best literature in the world.


Presented by Kevin Barents, teacher at the CAS Writing Program at Boston University since 2005. His poetry has been published in Slate, and AGNI Online, among others. Barents has discussed Bob Dylan's work and his BU classes on Dylan in NPR's Weekend Edition, the Korean TV station KBS, W Radio News, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and in his books: Dylan: Disc by Disc (2015) and Professing Dylan (2016).
