Bustles. Puffed sleeves. Corsets. Our image of nineteenth-century women’s clothing is of big, complicated dresses with constricting undergarments. Join us to dig deeper into the specifics of women’s fashion and how it changed between 1860 and 1900. Together, Cate Carver, Gibson House and Historic New England guide and fashion expert, and Gibson House Curator Meghan Gelardi Holmes will examine dresses from each decade, including examples from the museum's collection, and consider how women of all social classes wore—or aspired to wear—the fashions of the day.
