The Boston Public Library welcomes epidemiologist, journalist, and filmmaker Dr. Celine Gounder for an online conversation moderated by BPL President David Leonard. This program, presented in partnership with the GBH Forum Network, is part of both the Lowell Lecture Series sponsored by the Lowell Institute and the BPL's Repairing America Series.

In this compelling talk, Dr. Gounder will examine the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is getting a lot of questions from both American citizens and healthcare professionals on where we go from here. She wrote on Clinical Care Options that one of the biggest challenges during this epidemic is how to test for COVID-19. Says Gounder, a practicing HIV/infectious diseases specialist, “I have been getting emails and Twitter messages from healthcare providers all over the country saying that even the commercial labs like LabCorp and Quest won’t be able to provide them with testing until a few weeks from now.” Gounder also receives several questions from clinicians to the effect of “How do I deal with this myself?” and says we can learn from the universal precautions that came during the era of HIV.
Named one of People Magazine's 25 Women Changing the World in 2017, Dr. Celine Gounder is the CEO/President/Founder of Just Human Productions, a non-profit multimedia organization. She’s also the host and producer of American Diagnosis, a podcast on health and social justice, and Epidemic, a podcast about the SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 / coronavirus epidemic, which she co-hosts with former U.S. Ebola czar Ron Klain. She has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Guardian US, The Washington Post, Reuters, Quartz, Sports Illustrated and Bloomberg View. She’s a Medical Analyst for CNN, and prior to that, was a frequent expert guest on CNN, MSNBC, HLN, Al Jazeera America, CBSN, BBC, MTV, and Oprah Prime. She has covered everything from Ebola and Zika to the opioid overdose crisis and gun violence.
