Join the Municipality of Waterville Valley for a two-hour digital class about how to stay outside safely this winter with fellow hikers. Essential gear and safety topics will be discussed, and taking the class will make you eligible to join the guided winter hikes which you can find here.
How do I keep my water from freezing? How do I stay dry? When do I use snowshoes vs microspikes/crampons All of these questions and more will be used to help you learn techniques about how to manage your heat and stay dry with the right gear. Appropriate boots, socks, gaiters, and layers will be pointed out during the heat management process, and then material covering traction will follow. If you're not sure if the gear you have is enough for winter hikes, bring it to the class!
Benefits of taking the course
1. You will be eligible to join the physical, in-person winter hikes in our program at Waterville Valley
2. Your chances of being accepted on a winter hiking trip with others outside of Waterville Valley will be dramatically increased since you are on track to gain valuable knowledge from this class.
3. You will meet fellow hikers to set up winter trips based on your experience and needs.
4. You will able to address the doubts you've had about winter gear with the more experienced members of the community.
More about your teacher:
Erick Amero is the Adventure Programs Manager and lead guide for the Recreation Department of Waterville Valley, NH. Growing up in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Erick took an early interest in the areas’ limitless outdoor activities, everything from canoeing and kayaking, to fishing, rock climbing and hiking. A graduate of Northland College, he earned a degree in outdoor education. After college, he solo hiked the Appalachian trail, worked as a backcountry canoe ranger for the USFS, Sea kayak guide on Lake Superior, and worked for Outward Bound. He is currently a registered Maine guide, Ski patroller, and a Certified canoe and kayak instructor for the American Canoe Association. Erick is the overly proud father of twin boys, if he and his wife aren’t chasing after the kids, you can usually expect him to be fly fishing or on the water in a boat. He loves to teach about natural history and is enthusiastic about getting people outdoors.
