Join us for a discussion of relationships between language and music! We will explore how composers from the German-speaking world have taken musical inspiration from poetry in selected examples of Lieder, which transform poems into songs for solo voice with piano accompaniment.
This will be an opportunity to read and discuss some of the poems that have inspired musical composers, as well as a chance to listen together to German Lieder from the 19th century and to consider how the music relates to the poetry in these songs.
We will also reflect on the possibilities for how music can convey emotions or communicate meaning, both thinking about these Romantic-era Lieder and drawing on our own experiences listening to music in the present day.
All texts and discussions are in German; placement B2+ and native speakers are welcome; email [email protected] to register online. Participation $15
