City Councilor Josh Zakim will discuss measures that the Boston City Council has taken to protect and defend civil rights and liberties, especially since President Trump took office, as well as ways that cities, towns, and individuals can speak up and work together to advance legislative and policy solutions to issues of social justice.
Josh Zakim was elected to the Boston City Council on November 5, 2013. Josh represents District 8, which includes the neighborhoods of the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Kenmore Square, Mission Hill, and the West End.
Before running for his position on the Boston City Council, Josh worked as an attorney at Greater Boston Legal Services and then at the law firm Mintz Levin. In addition to his role on the City Council, Josh continues to be an active Board Member of the Lenny Zakim Fund, an organization founded by his father and friends over 20 years ago that supports innovative, grassroots organizations dedicated to tackling complex social issues.
On the Council Josh chairs the Committee on Housing and Community Development and the Special Committee on Civil Rights. A progressive voice, Josh continues to advocate for policies that promote social and economic justice, including improving access to Boston’s public schools, creating and maintaining affordable housing, and advocating for the rights of the working class, immigrant families, and the LGBTQ community.
Brought to you by the Beacon Hill Friends House Spring 2017 Speaker Series: Working for Racial Justice Today
