In a performance thankfully rescheduled from our 2020–21 season, bass-baritone extraordinaire Dashon Burton makes his Celebrity Series headlining debut with a uniquely American program. Our audiences might know him as a founding member of contemporary vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, but his artistry is even more expansive than suggested by that superlative association. Burton is also increasingly known for his enlightening and varied explorations of American music and history, and tonight’s program will add to that reputation.
Across five chapters—“The Shoulders of Giants,” “ Black Like Me: Songs of the Diaspora,” “The Makers,” “Langston and the Masters,” and “The Modern”—Burton will present a sweeping survey of great and significant American music, including works by John Jacob Niles, Kurt Weill, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, Paul Bowles, Margaret Bonds, William Grant Still, Harry Burleigh, Marquis L. A. Garrett, and Moses Hogan. The songs are well suited for a voice as majestic as Burton’s, and the composers’ stories are as intriguing as their time-tested creations. Taken together, this is an ambitiously curated and insightful suite aptly titled American Stories.
This performance also has a streaming option January 19-25, 2022:
