On April 28th, Sidestep Complex will bring together the jazz-rock fusion sextet The Sunset Kings, singer-songwriter Athena Desai, jazz outfit Lymbo, and indie folk-rock band Bears for Years onstage at Sally O' Brien's.
If anyone can bear testament to the the uncanny ability that music has in bringing people together, it is the newlywed power duo Sidestep Complex (the brainchild of New England creatives Dan Sheils and Liz Anaya Sheils). Originally a project stamped by the mercurial juxtaposition of contemplative violin sweeps interweaving spitfire rhymes over eclectic hip hop beats, the couple have, in recent years, taken on a more expansive role in music as organizers of their own show series.
Liz says, "We consider Sally O'Brien's our home bar. Five years ago, we got our start in the music scene in Union Square doing Shoney Lamar's 3penny Open Mic at Precinct, when we were living right behind the Independent. We’ve kept connected and we dig the relaxed vibe and the constant opportunity to make and maintain creative connections at Sally’s. We choose our artists because we believe in their music and we think that their audiences are a good match for overlap. Community is key."
And the community they build around themselves is an impressive one. Athena Desai is the co-writer of "Vertigo" for the Infamous Stringdusters latest album “Laws of Gravity” (which recently hit #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts), The Sunset Kings frontman has racked up songwriting credits on tracks for Haitian popstar Miu and two former members of the Motown girl group JADA, Lymbo’s members are regulars of the 503 Jam Sessions, and Bears For Years is in the process of completing their debut LP with local Boston legend Joel Simches running the board (which you can support here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-bears-for-years-finish-their-debut-album#/)
"We know what we would like to see in the scene - great music, great crowds, great sound, great vibe, plenty of networking, and lots of support. We want to create a space where audiences can blend and have a good time listening to the incredible talent from this area, and we're always kicking around new ideas to help make it all possible."
