Dance Prism will premiere its original treatment of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s most romantic love story, with performances at the Collins Center in Andover on April 22 at 1:00 pm, at the Curtis Theater in Sudbury on April 29 at 7:00 pm, and at the Performing Arts Center in Littleton on April 30 at 1:00 pm. The passionate tale of lovers trapped in the conflicts of a divided society has enthralled audiences for more than four centuries, its issues still resonant in the contemporary world.
This new production is choreographed by Miranda Bailey, former soloist and current Ballet Mistress of Columbia City Ballet, and Dance Prism Artistic Director Mary Demaso. Transposing the narrative of Romeo & Juliet to ballet is very natural. according to Demaso, as the lyricism of the young lovers’ poetry so readily inspires movement. The scenario also allows the rapture of the lovers, danced by Bailey and Matt Tucker, to be complemented by exuberant market scenes reflecting the multiple layers of Verona’s society, as well as the heart-stopping swordplay (set by dancer and stage combat specialist Terry Blogg) that swiftly ends in pointless death.
All performances of Romeo & Juliet will be followed by a complimentary reception at which audience members can meet the principal dancers. Additionally, because Romeo & Juliet is such a significant part of many schools’ curricula, Dance Prism will offer all students, regardless of age, admission at the lower child/senior rate. Special pre-performance programs may be arranged in advance for youth groups and other organizations. Seating is reserved; handicapped seating is available and easily accessible.
For all performances, tickets are available online at www.danceprism.com or at 978-371-1038.
