The cyanotype process is one of the earliest forms of photography, invented in the 1840s and popularized by British botanist Anna Atkins in her books Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. In 1875, the process was first taught to students at MIT.
Contemporary cyanotypes are made by placing photosensitive blueprint paper in the sun and using objects to cast shadows on the paper, most often organic specimens. After the print is developed, the paper is rinsed with water, revealing the iconic blue and white negative.
This workshop is presented in conjunction with Squash ‘Em, an exhibit by artist Heather Palecek. She aims to present a unique blend of arts and science through her photography, raising awareness about the invasive Spotted Lanternfly.
