Curtain Call Theatre (CCT) will present Lee Blessing’s “Eleemosynary”, on March 10, 11, 17 & 18 at 8:00 PM and March 12 & 19 at 2:00 PM. A sensitive, witty, and poignant play, “Eleemosynary” examines the profound and often rocky relationship between three generations of women: the strong-willed, eccentric grandmother, Dorothea; her brilliant daughter, Artie (Artemis); and Artie’s sensitive and smart daughter, Echo.
Directed by Bill Gardiner (Weymouth) and stage managed by Anne Gardiner (Weymouth), this production stars actors Karen Dervin (Billerica) as Dorothea, Brit Garner (Cambridge) as Artie, and Cassidy Guimares (Pembroke) as Echo. Says Dervin, “I saw the show in the mid-90s and fell in love with the story and the characters and have wanted to be a part of it ever since … it is a wonderful journey of three extraordinary women.”
Garner adds, “It's so rare that a script grabs me the way this one has. As a lover of words and intellectual female characters, ‘Eleemosynary’ really satisfies so many personal passions for me as an actor and as a human. I am beyond thankful to put these words on stage with these people in this space at this time.”
Says CCT Producing Artistic Director, Toni Ruscio, “We feel so blessed to offer our audiences this powerful story. Sometimes relationships are hard and complicated and messy, but despite the challenges that often arise, love exists. And, because love exists, so does hope. Such is the case with these three extraordinary women.
“ And Bill Gardiner, who has directed several shows for us in the past including ‘Frost/Nixon’, ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’, ‘ Good People’, and ‘Fuddy Meers’, is the perfect person to direct this play because he has the ability to always tap into the soul of a piece and to also tell the story that plays out between the lines.”
She added, “I’m particularly excited to have Bill working on this show because he is joined by his very talented wife, Anne, who is stage managing for him. They make a fantastic team. I love sitting in on rehearsals and watching as they respectfully exchange their thoughts and ideas. They have a such a wonderful mutual admiration for each other.”
Said Gardiner about working with his wife, “I’m thrilled to work with someone I trust implicitly. Anne has an eye for staging and an ear for nuance. Relying on her support and council makes me a better director.”
Tickets cost $22 each and can be purchased at www.curtaincallbraintree.org. Curtain Call Theatre is located at 182 Commercial Street in Braintree, Ma.
