Join the Boston Public Library for a classical and musical theatre performance by Cultural Wasteland as part of their Concerts in the Courtyard Series, which is sponsored by Bank of America.
Concerts will take place in the McKim Building Courtyard of the Central Library at Copley Square and are open to in-person audiences. No registration is required. In the event of inclement weather, performances will be moved inside to the Rabb Lecture Hall.

Cultural Wasteland aims to create immersive productions using local artists of all disciples in an intimate format. From classical music and opera to cabaret, musical theatre and new music Cultural Wasteland's goal is to create memorable concerts and opportunities for like minded artists to collaborate with one another and take creative risks as an ensemble.
Heather Gallagher, mezzo-soprano
Ms. Heather Gallagher’s work has been hailed for its “vivid, theatrical intensity” as well as its “perfection”(Boston Globe). Recent engagements include Haroun and the Sea of Stories (BMOP, Gil Rose, conductor), the world premiere of The Nefarious… Mr. Burke and Mr. Hare (Margaret, Boston Lyric Opera), Calixto Bieito's Carmen (Mercedes; Carmen cover, BLO) and Patience (Lady Saphir, Odyssey Opera), Trouble in Tahiti (Dinah, Metrowest Opera), Sumeida's Song (Asakir, BOC) and the title role in Carmen with Metrowest Opera. Last year, Ms. Gallagher created Cultural Wasteland, an eclectic company that focuses on small works and artist collaboration. Nicholas Brown, clarinet
Originally from Portland, ME, Nicholas Brown is Second/Bass Clarinet with the Boston Lyric Opera, Principal Clarinet with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Clarinet of Phoenix. He has performed with such groups as Chicago Symphony, Boston Philharmonic, and New World Symphony, and regularly appears with many other orchestras throughout New England.
Nicholas has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Symphony Nova, and will be performing Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at the Boston Festival Orchestra’s inaugural concert. In Fall 2019, he was a featured musician with the Celebrity Series of Boston’s Concert for One installation. He was the recipient of the 2019 Harold Wright Merit Award (Boston Woodwind Society), Jean & Harvey Picker Prize (Bay Chamber Concerts), Award for Woodwind Excellence (Boston University), and Emily K. Rand Scholarship (Portland Rossini Club). Beyond his solo engagements, Nicholas has been a Festival Artist at the Newport Music Festival in addition to performing in major concert halls throughout the world.
Yukiko Oba, piano
Ms. Oba has performed extensively as an accompanist for recitals, choruses, masterclasses and composers’ projects. Ms. Oba is a graduate of Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo. She began playing piano at the age of 6 in her native Japan. She has been a member of the accompanying staff at Boston Conservatory at Berklee since 1996 and has performed with many acclaimed Boston area singers. As a professional accompanist, she has participated in the MIT concert choir since the Fall of 2016 aside conductor Dr. William Cutter, worked with the Worchester Shubertiad and has been working with the Metropolitan Opera Guild for many years. Most recently, she performed Nico Muhley’s pieces for countertenor with Beth Morrison Project at the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. Ms. Oba resides in Weymouth, MA with her daughter and husband with whom she frequently plays four hand pieces with. In her leisure, she enjoys running, particularly marathons.
