Remember those quill pens you see so often in historical dramas? Guess what? You can hold one yourself! August 2nd is Colonial Fun Day at Martin House Farm. Come test your penmanship with actual quill pens, and don’t leave without making pomanders to gift to your loved ones! If you haven’t seen a pomander before, it is usually a ball filled with scented herbs or an orange with cloves designs. They were an early colonial air freshener and also thought to keep bad luck away.

Martin House Farm offers a glimpse back in time, a simple time and lots of time was spent together as a family. The property is a rare example of an 18th and early 19th-century farm which still retains the character of its original setting. It consists of the house, two barns and cultivated fields surrounded by dry stone walls and woodlands. Visitors can peek into the hay barn and visualize days gone by when the farmer was storing his hay there for bedding, covering crops, and feeding animals. The home was lived in continuously by members of the Martin family for over 200 years. Each room allows you to step back in time and visualize life in the early 1700s.

Martin House Farm is owned and operated by The National Society of The Colonial Dames in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This non-profit organization is celebrating its 127th year of service promoting its missions, which include historic preservation, patriotic services, and sponsoring of veterans programs and educational programs focused on early US history.

Martin House Farm is located at 22 Stoney Hill Road, Swansea, MA. Admission: $5, children under 12, active military and families- free
