City Ballet of Boston (CBB) under the artistic direction of Tony Williams, presents “Dance Distinctive,” an unforgettable celebration of dance, featuring six contemporary works including two premieres by choreographers Chu Ling and Lorraine Chapman. With dancers from City Ballet of Boston and Tony Williams Dance Center, the performances take place at the historic Strand Theatre in Dorchester, April 12-13.

The performances, at the Strand Theatre (543 Columbia Rd, Boston, MA 02125), take place on Saturday, April 12 at 3pm, and Sunday, April 13 at 3pm. Tickets start at $20 and are available at cityballetofboston.org.

Program:

Voices from the Past (2024, Stage premiere) - Dance Distinctive opens with Gianni Di Marco's striking piece that bridges the classical and the contemporary.

Life in Color (2017) -Through dynamic choreography and witty and humorous jazz poetry by Ken Nordine, Life in Color celebrates the vibrancy and complexity of the human experience.

Ginko Leaves (2025 world premiere) - Choreographer Chu Ling unites Chinese Classical Dance with ballet to create an elegant exploration of classical movement. This piece is inspired by the ginkgo leaves. The Chinese associate the ginkgo with Zen, as its antiquity and golden splendor symbolize the wisdom and strength of the ancient East. Like the elegant and composed ginkgo leaf, one should savor the present moment and embrace the impermanence of life.

Airs & Dances - was choreographed by Tony Williams and performed by his company, Ballet Theatre of Boston in 1985. Inspired by Ottorino Respighi’s harmonious score, Tony Williams' bright choreography reflects the precision and elegance of classical dance.

Ben's Trumpet - Inspired by Rachel Isadora’s Caldecott award - winning children’s book, Ben’s Trumpet transforms the rhythms of jazz music into movement, bringing to life the dreams of a young boy enchanted by the music from the 1930s & 40s. This ballet is a vibrant, heartfelt celebration of music, dreams, and the joy of self-expression. Ben’s Trumpet premiered in 2009, at the Wheelock Family Theater, in collaboration with Tony's former Boston Ballet colleague, Rachel Isadora, and set designer, Charles Baldwin.

Plus a world premiere created for City Ballet of Boston by Lorraine Chapman.
