In honor of the annual Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby celebrations falling on the same day this year, we have put together a round up of local hot spots that will be getting festive for both occasions:
Cask ‘n Flagon – Fenway (62 Brookline Avenue, Boston - 617.536.4840 – www.casknflagon.com)
Located in the heart of Fenway, Cask ‘n Flagon will host a hybrid Cinco de Mayo-Kentucky Derby celebration. The “greatest two minutes in sports” will be played on Cask’s 60+ HDTVs and beverage director Eric Hecht has created a duo of winning cocktails: a Mint Julep in a keepsake cup ($8.50) and Talk Derby to Me ($10.75). For those opting to wear a sombrero, chef Jimmy Regalado will preview his new Blackened Chicken Tacos ($14.99) with mango slaw and chipotle aioli wrapped in Boston lettuce, a lighter take on everyone’s favorite treat that will debut on the menu later this spring. If traditional tacos are more your thing, opt for the signature fish or pork belly versions.
City Tap House (10 Boston Wharf Road, Boston – 617.904.2748 – www.boston.citytap.com)
In honor of the Kentucky Derby, City Tap House will be transforming its firepit-lined patio into a rosé garden for dapper gentlemen and refined belles to don their Derby finest. From seersucker suits to feathered toppers, the best dressed will score a $100 gift card to be used on a future visit. With live music, swag from their event partners and chatter about the best thoroughbreds, the bar will be shaking up cocktails worthy of a trifecta win: Frozen Woodford Reserve Mint Juleps ($12); Sweet Peach Tea with Maker’s Mark, peach puree, lemongrass syrup and iced tea ($12); and, Angry Orchard’s Rosé cider – to be consumed all day. For those looking to Cinco, City Tap has you covered with their Tecate & Picante special, a bucket of five Tecates paired with tortilla chips and ensalata picante salsa for $20.
Earls Kitchen + Bar at the Prudential Center (800 Boylston St Unit 107, Boston – 857.957.0949 – www.earls.ca)
Earls is taking a trip south of the border for Cinco de Mayo with a collection of themed specials and décor to match. All day, sip on $5 margaritas that come in a trio of flavors: charred jalapeño, Sriracha-pineapple and coconut-mint. To snack, there will be Blackened Swordfish Tacos with melted white cheddar, roasted jalapeño crema, pico de gallo and fresh cilantro ($15.75) and Queso Fundido with chorizo, poblano and salsa fresca ($12.95).
