Mary-Anne Morrison of the Osher Lifelong Learning Program at UMass Boston will give a presentation about the late artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude and their decades-long careers to achieve projects that always seemed impossible. Following the presentation, there will be time for audience Q&A.
About the program
Born on the same day in 1935, the late artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude embarked on a decades-long careers to achieve projects that always seemed impossible. These were large-scale installations that included wrapping the Reichstag in fabric and installing 7,503 “gates” across 23 miles of pathways in Central Park—works that Christo himself described as “totally irrational, totally useless.” Many were nonetheless stunning in their impracticality. They self-funded each project to maintain total control over their work and recycled all materials when each project was dismantled. Their personal stories are as fascinating as their installations. And they challenge the viewers to ask, “what is art?”

She was a curriculum committee member for several years and its co-chair for two. Professionally, Mary-Anne spent 40 years managing affordable housing programs for the Commonwealth. She is a late-in-life abstract artist.
